Abstract : This study aimed to evaluate the role of occupational health and safety management in the collection and transportation of medical waste in King Abdulaziz Medical City in Jeddah. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher used the descriptive analytical method, relying on the questionnaire tool that the study applied to a sample of (350) cleaners of different nationalities working in King Abdulaziz City, in addition to a random sample of (400) workers and medical staff in the city. The results of this study showed that pharmaceutical waste is the major type of waste in King Abdulaziz Medical City, followed by sharp waste and by radioactive waste. It also indicated that different types of waste are collected and managed in compliance with the procedures according to the color guide, and placed in the dedicated areas. The results showed the knowledge and awareness of workers about the importance of the efficient medical waste management in terms of procedures and practices, including separate collection and transportation of medical waste and regular waste, as well as the correct use of the provided personal protective equipments. The study also showed that the employees exposed to biological hazards received specific vaccinations to prevent some infectious diseases. Moreover, periodic trainings dealing with the collection and disposal of the different types of medical waste were given to employees. The results also showed that there was no statistically significant differences between cleaners and medical staff concerning the average estimates of the importance of knowledge of the correct practices of collection and transportation of medical waste and the impact of training according to the different studied variables (gender, nationality, age, educational level, professional experience, work position). This shows that all cleaners and medical personnel of different sex, nationality, age, scientific qualifications, experience and nature of work agree on the importance of the knowledge and practices of medical waste collection and transport. The study ultimately showed an impact of training on the level of awareness of health care workers about waste types, which shows that training contributes significantly to increasing the awareness of cleaners and medical personnel in the collection and transport of medical waste.   The study recommended the necessity of conducting educational lectures regarding the proper methods of dealing with medical waste, the necessity of monitoring the transfer and management of medical waste in accordance with the instructions and regulations, the necessity of making sure that filled waste bags and containers are replaced in a timely manner, monitoring the transfer of medical waste from departments, and making sure that the collected waste in the hospital are exclusively transported by the appropriate carts to the place of treatment or final disposal.
